You Are Not Your Thoughts

Thinking is a chemical reaction in the brain. While it feels real, it is not the essence of who you are. Just like any chemical reaction, it’s temporary and depends on a living, functioning brain. When the body ceases to exist, the thinking mind stops, revealing that thoughts are not permanent or absolute.

This means that the thoughts shaping your life right now are not fixed realities but flexible patterns you can change. They are not you, but the product of your mind, and they can be reshaped to create the life you truly want.

The Glass of Water and the Ocean

A young man once sought out a wise teacher to find the meaning of his restless thoughts. He said, “I feel trapped by my own mind, constantly wrestling with worries, doubts, and fears. How do I break free from this mental prison?”

The teacher smiled, picked up a glass of water, and said, “Hold this.”

The young man took the glass. At first, it felt light and effortless. But as the minutes passed, his arm began to ache, and the glass felt heavier. He shifted uncomfortably, struggling to keep his grip.

The teacher noticed his discomfort and said, “Your thoughts are like this glass of water. They are real as long as you hold on to them. The longer you grip them, the heavier they become, the more they strain you. But if you set the glass down, you are free to move, to rest, to live.”

Then, the teacher took the glass and walked to the shore of a vast ocean nearby. He poured the water from the glass into the sea. “Your thoughts are like this small cup of water. They feel significant when contained in the glass of your mind, but they are nothing compared to the vast ocean of who you truly are.”

He continued, “Your mind is a tool, not a prison. Just as this glass was never meant to hold the entire ocean, your thoughts are not meant to contain the entirety of your being. Remember, you are not your thoughts. They are temporary, chemical sparks in your brain, but you are far greater than any single thought you hold.”

The young man watched the water blend into the ocean and felt a sense of peace. He realized that he was not his thoughts, but the vast, unbound awareness that could rise above them.

The Mind as a Tool, not a Prison

Your mind is a tool, not a prison. It’s a remarkable instrument for shaping your reality, solving problems, and creating meaning. But, like any tool, it must be used correctly.

Just as a hammer is not meant to paint a masterpiece or a compass isn’t meant to fly a plane, your mind isn’t meant to define the full extent of who you are. It’s a part of you, but it isn’t the whole.

Think of your mind like the glass of water we discussed earlier. It holds thoughts, emotions, and perceptions, but it is not the vast ocean of your being. The glass can contain water, but it can never hold the ocean.

          Why This Matters:

  • Thoughts Are Temporary: Your thoughts are chemical reactions in the brain, momentary flashes of perception and judgment. They rise and fall like waves, but they do not define the ocean.
  • The Mind is a Servant, not a Master: If you allow your mind to run without direction, it can become a prison, trapping you in endless loops of worry, self-doubt, and fear. But when you remember that the mind is a tool, you can use it to carve out a reality that aligns with your true self.
  • You Are the Observer, not the Thought: Just as the ocean remains vast and undisturbed by the small waves on its surface, you are the awareness behind your thoughts. You are the observer, the consciousness that remains, even when the waves of thought come and go.

  • Instead of letting your mind run you, direct it like a sculptor guides a chisel. Use it to build, create, and explore, but don’t mistake it for the entire structure of your being.
  • Mind as a Tool for Creation: Use it to imagine, to dream, to plan.
  • Mind as a Tool for Understanding: Use it to reflect, to learn, to connect the dots.
  • Mind as a Tool for Growth: Use it to challenge old beliefs, to seek truth, and to expand your potential.

In this way, your mind becomes a powerful ally rather than a silent warden
